What you need to know about biometrics for a Canada visa
What are biometrics?
Biometrics are physical or behavioural characteristics that can be used to identify a person. Examples of biometric data include fingerprints, facial recognition, and iris scans. When applying for a Canadian visa, applicants must provide their biometric information.
The biometric fee is $85 CAD per person and must be paid when submitting the application. The fee covers the cost of collecting, processing and storing your biometric information.
Where do I submit my biometrics?
You can submit your biometrics at one of the designated VACs (Visa Application Centres). You can find the nearest VAC by visiting eVisa Canada.
When submitting your biometrics, you must bring two pieces of valid identification such as a passport or driver’s license. You may also be asked to provide additional documents such as proof of travel plans or financial support.
How long does it take to process my biometrics?
It usually takes up to 10 business days for your biometric information to be processed. However, it can take longer depending on the volume of applications being processed.
Note: If you have already submitted your biometric information in the past 10 years, you may not need to submit them again.
What happens after I submit my biometrics?
Once your biometric information has been processed, you will receive an email notification from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). This email will contain instructions on how to complete the next steps in the visa application process.
Note: It is important to follow all instructions carefully and respond promptly to any requests from IRCC.
