What is a Green Card?
A Green Card, also known as a Permanent Resident Card, is an identification card issued by the United States government that allows foreign nationals to live and work in the United States permanently. It grants them certain rights and privileges, such as the right to travel freely within the US and access certain social services.
The Green Card is valid for 10 years and must be renewed before it expires. Once you have had your Green Card for five years, you may be eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship.
Requirements for Obtaining a Green Card
In order to obtain a Green Card, you must meet certain eligibility requirements set by the U.S. government. These include:
You must be at least 18 years old; You must have a valid passport; You must have proof of financial stability; You must have no criminal record; You must pass a medical examination; and You must demonstrate knowledge of English.
You may also need to provide additional documents depending on your situation, such as evidence of family ties or employment in the US.
How to Get a Green Card
There are several ways to obtain a Green Card, including through family sponsorship, employment sponsorship, or through the Diversity Visa Lottery Program (DV).
If you are sponsored by an employer or family member, they will need to file an I-130 Petition for Alien Relative, which will then be reviewed by U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). If approved, you will then need to complete an application form and attend an interview with USCIS.
If you are applying through the DV program, you will need to submit an online application during the annual registration period (usually from October 1st – November 30th). If selected in the lottery, you will then need to complete an application form and attend an interview with USCIS.
USA ESTA
If you are travelling to the United States for business or pleasure, you may need an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). An ESTA is required for citizens of visa waiver countries who wish to enter the US without obtaining a visa first.

Once approved, your ESTA will be valid for two years or until your passport expires – whichever comes first.
