What is Form N-600?
Form N-600, Application for Certificate of Citizenship, is used by individuals who are already U.S. citizens to obtain proof of their citizenship status. This form is typically used by those who were born outside the United States or its territories and want to obtain a Certificate of Citizenship as evidence of their citizenship.
The application must be filed with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). It is important to note that filing Form N-600 does not automatically grant citizenship; it only serves as proof that the applicant is already a citizen.
Who Can File Form N-600?
Form N-600 can be filed by individuals who meet certain criteria, including:
- Individuals born outside the United States or its territories to at least one U.S. citizen parent;
- Individuals born in the United States or its territories to two non-U.S.-citizen parents;
- Individuals adopted by a U.S. citizen parent; and
- Individuals born in wedlock to one U.S.-citizen parent and one non-U.S.-citizen parent.
Note: Individuals who are already U.S. citizens through naturalization do not need to file Form N-600.
Required Documents
When filing Form N-600, applicants must submit certain documents along with their application, such as:
- Proof of identity;
- Proof of relationship between the applicant and his or her U.S.-citizen parent;
- Proof of the applicant’s birth abroad; and
